Record Redesign

I redesigned Modest Mouse’s record “Strangers to Ourselves” in this project. The original cover for the 2015 album is an overview shot of a suburb in a hexagonal shape. The back features a close-up shot of one of the houses. While a cool idea, in theory, its execution ended up being confusing and unpleasant to the eye. When I went to recreate it, I knew I wanted to do something in the style of the 1950s suburbia that the original had, but also play on the fact that much of the album discusses one’s identity and not knowing who or what they may be and the struggles of growing older. I took inspiration from advertisements of the 1950s for the art style as well as more trippy modern interpretations of that kind of art. I also choose to use colors that would’ve been commonly used during the ‘50 as well to further this connection. I also created a set of stickers, a tote bag, and a gif advertisement that could have been used on Instagram or other social media.
